For over 45 years, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra has proudly provided, free of charge, a unique opportunity to experience live symphonic music via the GSO Children’s Concert. This free concert is a continuing commitment by Greenville Symphony Orchestra to provide cultural enrichment for the youth in Mercer and surrounding counties. Over 1700 Elementary students travel to Passavant Center each year from as far away as Youngstown, OH to participate in our performance. As part of the concert experience, the GSO provides instrument demonstrations, conducting opportunities for audience members, as well as an introduction to classical pieces as well as orchestral demonstrations of popular scores from movies, Broadway and pop music.
The GSO provides participating schools with teaching materials (listening maps, background information on composers, recordings of featured concert pieces, and resources for further instruction) highlighting a featured concert piece. Featured selections in years past include Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens, On the Trail from the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe, Hoedown from Rodeo by Aaron Copland and The Planets by Gustav Holst.
Our Children’s Concert is a vital part of our season each year. Our goal is to fill every seat in Passavant Center and inspire young listeners. If you or your organization would like more information, please contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org and a member of our Children’s Concert Committee will get back to you to discuss reserving seating for your organization at our next Children’s Concert in October.
